Task:8 potential of digital media in art and design

this is my web banner I had chosen to make it as a game because it is a games design course I had thought it would be better that if I had made a small game to show that the potential student the reason I Had made the game it was is because I had made a mascot for the postcard and I thought I can incorporate the the same character into all my advertisement but it turns out I couldn't get it for the poster due to time .I had thought the most common noticed web banner that catches attention are target games so I had chosen to make the game where you eat the fly and then link into the application site if they had wanted to learn about games design.
this is the post card I thought that this was a useful postcard because it has a friendly looking character it congratulates the person on getting into the college. the frog character for the course that I had designed to try and influence the new students to show that they can create a character as well in after the course or even during

this poster I had decided to use minimalism on the poster I chose a play station 1 controller soon as almost everyone will recognise it and it shows that it will be about games I had chosen a retro style text that was used in games because that is the font that suits the image the most

Sustainability issues

the sustainability issues that are avoided in digital media of art and design are printing issues
and  transporting issues.By this I mean by creating art on computer it means it would be better for the environment it cost less as well. trees would be less likely to be chopped down for paper
and during the distribution it will cost fuel and it will effect the environment.

it will be made on a computer the advantages to this are no materials will be used during the production for example if you are using Photoshop and you make a mistake you can undo the stroke but if you use paint and you make a mistake you will need to either start again or adjust to the mistake.

the main downside to this is that not many think about is the materials that are used to make the electricity to run the computer for the time it takes to make the piece in the first place however in terms of costs and fuels it isn't as much as it is to be able to create the image.

and lastly on this subject it is easy to distributed by this I mean where on the printed versions of things it will take several days to send where it will take several minutes to send via web/ email.

 Ease of editing

it is allot easier to edit with digital versions than it is with printed versions besides the example I made earlier for example you can take an image from the Internet and edit it so much it looks nothing like the original image.

another thing is when editing one thing but in flash it will change all versions of an item with the exact same name this can save allot of time. for example if there is 150 instance of say a cloud
and you needed to erase a outline that connected a cloud to the ground it will be able to get rid of all the outlines on the cloud

in software's for example Photoshop  3-D's Max  Maya, etc ... will have more than 64 colours unlike the paint counterparts and felt tips even less software's like the mentioned earlier have nearly 7000 colours this will define the difference due to the amounts in numbers digital has a higher potential to produce A better piece

another thing is the ability to get exact copy even certain areas the clone tool is a perfect example of this because of this you can create textures impossible otherwise.

also in 3-D modelling it uses segments to be able to select only certain sections you want to edit but with plasticine or clay you can't do that.

Production costs

when it comes to production costs it is a little difficult to find out the exact price
but I  estimate
to produce a poster it would cost around
£300 for the software of Photoshop
the costs for the computer will range between £100-£700
the electricity during the time of production given that it takes 3 days to create will cost around £10
so it will cost from £410- £1010

when it comes to materials it may cost
to get the paper for designing / mock ups £5
the canvas will cost around £10-£100 depending on the size
paint will cost £3 each colour so more colours more it will cost and that for 1 poster
printing may cost from £10 - £50 depending on numbers
then shipping/ distribution £500-£1000
so it will cost from
£528-£1185

but this is in the recent years
this used to be cheaper to create by the materials rather than digital when high quality computers costs allot more than it does now although the software was also cheaper with the upgrading of
the software for its time changes the prices

so the choice in terms of cost will be much better to be made digitally mainly distribution  and the time it is that it is being produced

A not mentioned fact is the time it takes to create and time to learn how to use software
the time it takes to master Photoshop will be from 3 months -1 year of intense practise after  then when you have learnt how to use the software you may need to learn how to use as graphics tablet
which the time it will take to learn how to use the tablet will depend on how well you are used to using a pen or pencil from 1 day - several months
the only transferable traditional skill that comes to mind is the transfer from pen and pencil to a tablet because these are so similar in terms of how it works .

Creative possibilities made by the use of digital media
there is several technique that have only became possible from technical software and digital production these are a huge range from movie scenes that seem so realistic you wouldn't notice unless shown examples are Matt paintings  to games that run from a touch of the finger but I will talk about a few of these examples.

Matte paintings are background that can only be made involving a green screen and a computer with many layers these are made in layers on a software such as Photoshop to be able to construct a scene that is realistic you wouldn't realise some movie's that use these are : "sin city" ," lord of the rings" and "fast and furious ".
the detail will take from 3 days to 1 months worth of tweaking to get the best result.

Adding sounds to software such as flash you can add sound by simple dragging a recorded sound into a frame unlike traditional forms of animation. You would not be able to add sound to a flick book for example.

Also with digital productions you can add interaction that will make the users continue looking at the unit , file that they are looking at rather than to be looking at something else and coming back to it when the feel like it and forget where they were at.

On top of what has already been mentioned you can add videos / animations to other forms of media such as games. this is useful because it allows multiple forms of media combine to give bigger impacts the bigger impacts the more likely that the viewer will enjoy the media.

The reason that the enjoyment of the media is important is because the more that the user enjoys the
media the more likely that the user will use similar media more and more often buying more of the media
for example if a person had just bought a game made by a certain company and it turned out to be there favourite game the more likely that they will buy the next game in the franchise the and the more that happens the more money the company makes allowing it to grow and make even more games in that franchise.

And as the technologies evolve the better it is meaning the quality of the media can increase the better the potential the higher quality of the media example as mobile phones have improved from several years ago the mobile phone only had simple games such as snake and it couldn't get any more than 1 game but as the technology has improved the games marketplace for mobile phones is flooded with games movie's ,books and other applications

Tablets similar to mobiles however are not as old tablets are a recent addition to the mobile devices they started from from the laptop they had compacted all of it into just the screen and it was basically a start of the touch screen then it seemed to go from just tablets to phones then then to some desktops and then they released convertible laptops and as the technology has improved this has allowed the media to be at the top quality that it can be until the future development

lastly the games market has changed over the time that this changed over the time as the digital media has improved as its improving it has gone from a couple games who character we only 6 pixels big now to 3-d models that have over 1000 times the detail . the amount of media that is required to make the games has now  increased into a unexpected number of roles from coders  all the way to 3-d modellers the games market in my opinion is the biggest industry for the digital media at this current date.
